“FOUR 9's”

Numerology is popular in Burma, and there was a strong feeling among exiled Burmese activists in Thailand that September 9, 1999, otherwise known as the “four 9's,” would be an auspicious day. A major demonstration was held at the Burma Embassy in Bangkok, in the hopes that it would give new momentum to the opposition to the dictatorship. Dictator Watch documented the demo, and as the last photo shows, we of course participated in it as well.

The demonstration began with a moment of silence. It ended with the burning of the dictatorship's flag.
